Regarding the Marathi Language

Marathi stands as one of India's extensively spoken languages, boasting the fourth-largest community of native speakers. Globally, it holds the 19th position among the most widely spoken languages. Dating back to approximately 900 AD, Marathi literature represents one of the earliest expressions of modern Indo-Aryan languages. The two primary Marathi dialects are Standard Marathi and Varhadi.

Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, also known as Kusumagraj, a renowned Marathi language writer and recipient of the Jnanpith prize, is honored worldwide on Marathi Language Day, celebrated on February 27th. The enduring popularity of Kusumagraj's poems extends beyond Maharashtra, making this day a global celebration of his literary contributions.

He was a renowned figure in Marathi literature, excelling as a poet, playwright, novelist, and short story writer. His literary works were imbued with a deep sense of humanism, advocating for the rights of the marginalized and oppressed, emphasizing freedom, justice, and emancipation. Recognizing his literary prowess, he was honored with numerous state and national awards. In 1974, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi for his notable work "Natsamrat," followed by the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Dnyanpith award in 1987. Posthumously, his birth anniversary was designated as Marathi Rajbhasha Gaurav Din in 1990, commemorating his significant contributions to the Marathi language and culture.

In Maharashtra, this occasion is marked with cultural festivities in schools and institutions. Renowned Marathi melodies like 'Mayaboli Marathi' resonate, accompanied by presentations highlighting the life events of Kusumagraj. In Nashik, the hometown of Shirwadkar, grand special festivals are organized to commemorate the occasion.
